Controls
GTA 4 in Browser uses a familiar keyboard-and-mouse layout: W, A, S and D to move or drive, the mouse to look and aim, F to get in and out of cars and Space for jumping on foot or the handbrake behind the wheel. Click inside the game window first so it receives your input.
On Foot
- W A S D walk in any direction
- Shift sprint
- Space jump
- Mouse turn the camera
- Left mouse button punch or fire
- Right mouse button aim
- F enter a nearby vehicle
Sprinting is the fastest way to reach a parked car during a chase. Aiming before firing makes shots far more accurate than spraying from the hip.
In a Vehicle
- W accelerate
- S brake and reverse
- A and D steer
- Space handbrake for tight turns
- Mouse look around the car
- F exit the vehicle
Brake with S before corners and use Space only for sharp turns. Holding the handbrake too long kills speed and spins the car.
Reversing out of a crash is quicker than walking to another car in most cases. Hold S until the car is clear, then steer away from the obstacle before accelerating again.
Menus and Screen
- Esc release the mouse and open the menu
- Fullscreen button on the page enlarges the game window
Fullscreen gives a wider view of the street, which helps during chases. Esc returns control of the mouse to the browser when you need it.
When Keys Stop Working
If nothing happens when you press W, the game frame has lost focus. Click once inside the game and try again. This also happens after switching tabs or clicking outside the frame.
Laggy input usually means the browser is struggling with graphics. Close other heavy tabs and enable hardware acceleration, as described in the beginner guide.
Touch screens are less reliable for 3D city builds. A keyboard and mouse give much more control, especially for steering and aiming at the same time.
In the original GTA IV, the phone holds extra tricks such as cheat numbers; those are listed on the cheats page.
