Liberty City Map

Liberty City in GTA IV is a New York-inspired city split into five areas across three main islands: Broker and Dukes on the east island, Bohan to the north, Algonquin in the middle and Alderney across the river to the west. Knowing which area matches which real place, and when each one opens in the story, makes the city far easier to read, whether you are driving the original or a browser slice inspired by it.

The Five Areas at a Glance

BohanThe BronxTough northern streets and Mallorie's home turf
AlgonquinManhattanSkyscrapers, parks, money and the busiest traffic

Broker and Dukes sit together on one island, which is why the opening hours feel compact. Algonquin is long and narrow, packed with towers, while Alderney is a separate landmass with a very different, more industrial mood.

Driving between areas means crossing bridges or using tunnels and the subway. Those crossings shape chases, since a bridge leaves very few side streets for escape.

How the Islands Open Up

At the start of the original story, the bridges out of Broker and Dukes are closed. In-game news blames a terror alert and criminal activity, but the real purpose is pacing: the city opens as Niko's story grows. Crossing a closed bridge early brings an instant high wanted level.

  1. Bohan opens after the mission The Cousins Bellic, when Niko and Roman flee to Mallorie's area.
  2. Algonquin opens after Blow Your Cover, the job that moves Niko deeper into the city's power structure.
  3. Alderney opens after Three Leaf Clover, the bank heist with the McReary brothers.

By the time Alderney opens, Niko has worked for Russians, Jamaicans, Irish and Italian crews. The map literally grows with the size of his problems.

Broker and Dukes

Broker is home. Niko arrives at the docks, Roman's taxi depot and first apartment sit in Hove Beach, and the boardwalk at Firefly Island is close by. The neighborhood is dense with low buildings and narrow streets, which makes it a good place to learn driving.

Dukes adds Francis International Airport, wide highways and quieter residential blocks. The airport area is a reliable spot for fast cars, and the long roads around it are some of the best for testing top speed.

Together they form the starting zone. Players who learn their back streets early have a big advantage in the first wanted-level chases.

Bohan and Algonquin

Bohan is rough, hilly and full of tight blocks. It is where Niko and Roman hide after their first apartment is burned, and where several gang-related missions take place.

Algonquin is the heart of the city. Middle Park, Star Junction with its bright billboards, the financial district and the Rotterdam Hill area all sit on this island, and so do many of the best safehouses and fastest cars. Traffic is heavy, which makes Algonquin chases intense and unpredictable.

Explorers love Algonquin for its rooftops and landmarks. The Statue of Happiness, the city's take on the Statue of Liberty, stands on its own small island just offshore.

Alderney

Alderney feels like a different city. Factories, warehouses and riverside roads dominate, and the Pegorino crime family operates from here in the final chapters. The highways are wide and the police stations are spread out, which creates long, open chases.

Its western edge borders the river, and the bridges back to Algonquin are long. Getting caught on one with a high wanted level is a classic way to fail a mission.

When a chase starts in Alderney, avoid the long bridges unless you are already out of sight. Industrial back roads and large buildings are better places to break the search area.

Using Map Knowledge in Practice

Browser adaptations usually show a smaller piece of this world. Whatever streets you see, the same principles apply: identify the main avenues, find the alleys and underpasses, and note where water or bridges limit your options. Those habits work in any version of Liberty City.

For chases, combine this map knowledge with the escape tactics in our wanted level guide. For choosing a car to explore with, the fastest cars guide lists where the quickest vehicles spawn across Broker, Algonquin and the airport.

The story behind each area, from Hove Beach to the Pegorino mansion, is covered in story and endings.
