Wanted Levels
Losing the police in GTA IV comes down to one rule: get outside the flashing search circle on the map and stay out of sight until it fades. Every star adds more units, a wider circle and more aggressive tactics, so the earlier you break line of sight, the cheaper the escape.
How the Search Circle Works
When police spot a crime, a red-and-blue flashing circle appears on the map, centered where they last saw Niko. The wanted level does not drop while you are inside it. If an officer spots you again, the circle jumps to your new position and the timer resets.
Stars change color to show what the police know. White stars mean officers can see you, while grey stars mean they have lost sight and are searching. Grey is the moment to slip away quietly rather than keep driving fast past patrols.
Leaving the circle and staying hidden for several seconds clears the wanted level. The in-game hint sums it up as escaping the flashing zone, and the whole system is built around that idea.
What Each Star Brings
| Stars | Police response |
|---|---|
| 1 | Patrols try to arrest; officers fire only if threatened; search area about two blocks |
| 2 | Officers shoot more readily; cars try to overtake and force you off the road |
| 3 | NOOSE roadblocks, Patriots and Cruisers, shotgun officers and a helicopter with sharpshooters |
| 4 | FIB and NOOSE tactical units in armor; search area roughly the size of Bohan |
| 5 | A NOOSE Annihilator joins the helicopter; rooftop snipers in some areas |
| 6 | Two Annihilators, relentless ramming and a search area as big as Broker and Dukes together |
At one star, some normal activities are blocked: you cannot buy items except from vending machines, ride taxis as a passenger or enter bars. That alone is a reason to clear even a minor wanted level quickly.
Serious crimes skip levels. Shooting or killing an officer with a firearm jumps straight to three stars.
Fastest Ways to Lose the Police
There are several reliable methods, and the best one depends on how many stars you have and where you are. Low levels forgive almost anything, while five or six stars demand a plan before you move.
- Escape the circle. Drive or run out of the search area, then hide. Alleys, parking garages and underpasses break line of sight.
- Pay 'n' Spray. Driving into one clears the wanted level instantly, as long as no officer is watching you enter.
- Change cars. Dispatch tracks your last known vehicle, so swapping cars out of view makes you harder to find.
- Save at a safehouse. Sleeping in a safehouse bed clears the stars but moves the clock forward six hours.
- Ask a friend. Kiki Jenkins and Francis McReary can remove up to three stars once the right conditions are met.
The Pay 'n' Spray also advances time by three hours, which rarely matters but can affect timed side activities. It cannot be used while an officer is watching, so lose the patrol first and then drive in.
Handling Helicopters and Roadblocks
From three stars, a police helicopter joins the hunt. It tracks you from above and its spotlight follows you at night. Going underground, staying inside a large structure for a long time or taking out both sharpshooters makes it leave.
Roadblocks appear on main routes and bridges. Slowing down before a junction and taking a side street is safer than ramming through, since NOOSE vehicles are heavy and the officers behind them fire immediately.
Tunnels and the subway are the classic helicopter counter. Duck into one, change direction underground and come out far from where you went in.
Applying This in the Browser
Browser builds inspired by GTA IV use a simpler pursuit system, but the same habits work: break line of sight, avoid long straight roads, change vehicles and do not fight a growing crowd of pursuers. Players who use the search-circle mindset escape far more often than those who simply drive fast.
Pair these tactics with the street knowledge in the Liberty City map guide and a quick car from the fastest cars list. For phone codes that clear or raise the wanted level in the original game, see GTA 4 cheats.
Getting caught has a cost in the original: an arrest takes all weapons and some money, and a few hours pass before Niko is released at a police station. At three stars or more, officers rarely try to arrest at all, which makes escape the only realistic option.
Wanted Level Questions
How do you lose a wanted level fast?
Leave the flashing search circle and stay hidden until the stars disappear. A Pay 'n' Spray works instantly if no officer sees you enter.
What does a grey star mean?
Grey stars mean the police have lost sight of you. It is the best moment to slow down, hide or switch vehicles.
Which achievements involve the police?
One achievement asks you to lose a four-star wanted level, and One Man Army asks you to survive six stars for five minutes. Both reward the escape skills described above.
