Fastest Cars

The fastest cars in GTA IV top out at about 99 mph, and a whole group shares that ceiling: the Banshee, Comet, Coquette, Infernus and Turismo. What separates them in practice is grip, braking and where you can find one, so the best pick depends on whether you want a getaway car, a racer or something to cruise Algonquin in.

Top speed is only part of the story. Liberty City's streets are crowded and full of junctions, so acceleration and braking decide most races and chases long before any car reaches its maximum.

Players who love tuning numbers argue endlessly about which of the 99 mph group is truly fastest. In real driving, the answer is usually the one you can control best.

Picking a Car for Each Job

The Turismo and Infernus are favorites for timed missions because they combine speed with stable handling. The Banshee is wild and fun but loose at the rear, which makes it a handful in heavy traffic.

The Comet and Coquette sit in the middle. Both grip well and brake hard, and many experienced players rate them as the most balanced choices for long chases.

The Super GT is slightly slower on paper but feels planted. On wet roads or in dense Algonquin traffic, that stability often matters more than a few mph.

  • Getaways: Turismo or Infernus for speed with control.
  • Street races: Comet or Coquette for grip in corners.
  • Cruising: Banshee for style and sound.
  • Bad weather: Super GT for stability.

Motorcycles

The NRG 900 is the fastest bike in the base game at about 93 mph. It slips through traffic like nothing else, which makes it ideal for escaping roadblocks.

The downside is fragility. A single bump at speed throws Niko off, and on a bridge that usually ends the chase.

The episodes add faster bikes. The Lost and Damned brings the Hakuchou Custom and Double T Custom, while The Ballad of Gay Tony adds the Vader and the Vapid Bullet GT car.

Summoning Cars by Phone

In the original game, Niko's phone can spawn several fast vehicles with cheat numbers. These are handy for testing cars or starting a chase in style, though using cheats can disable some achievements.

Driving Tips for Fast Cars

Brake before corners, not in them. GTA IV's heavier physics punish late braking more than older games, and a sports car sliding wide into traffic loses all its advantage.

Use the handbrake sparingly. It helps on tight turns but kills speed, and overusing it makes fast cars feel slow.

Watch for damage as well. A sports car that starts smoking loses power, and pushing it further ends with a stalled engine in the worst possible place, so swap to a fresh car before that happens.

Park a fast car near your safehouse before a hard mission. Starting a job in a Turismo instead of a random sedan makes timed sections far less stressful.

In a browser adaptation, the car list is shorter and the handling is simpler, but the same advice holds: pick the most controllable fast car available, brake early and avoid long straights during chases. Combine this with the wanted level guide and the map guide for the best escapes.
